The Sunflower P-30 was inspired
by the Gerald Ritzenthaler class “C”
tractor model in the 1937 Model Aeronautics Yearbook. The
elegant ellipse shape of the wing, and how it was built,
really intrigued me.

Since reading about the “Ritz” wing some 8 years
ago, I have seen 3 or 4 other models in old magazines that
used it with very good results.
|
|
This year I wanted a nice looking P-30 model unlike others
I’ve seen on the flying field, and the “Ritz”
wing came to mind again.
|
|
I drew a nice-looking 30-inch wing and used some 7lb, 3/32”
wood for outline. I also made an airfoil template to make sliced
ribs for the wing. Using the same template, I cut some ¼”
inch thick ribs and glued them to a piece of 1 x 6 pine. This
made up the jig to curve the wings to the proper camber. Next,
I notched the leading and trailing edges in the wing outline
to accept the sliced ribs, and then I wet the outline and pinned
it to the form. After it dried overnight, I placed the sliced
ribs in the proper positions and trimmed each to fit.
