Make Your Models Modular With Foam Sockets

One of my favorite aspects of building model airplanes is thinking of ways to lighten a structure, and also how to make individual parts serve more than one function. Here’s a method to make parts such as wings and landing gear detachable. It is lighter than the traditional peg and rubber band system and has the added benefit of being hidden within the structure. The foam sockets and wood pin provide some flexibility, and should pop apart for the inevitable bumps and knocks associated with flying.

The photos should be self-explanatory. Here are a few suggestions:

Layout the pins so they are well supported by the surrounding structure on each side of the joint. The foam socket should mainly hold the pin in place, not take the forces across the joint.

Use gussets as appropriate to secure the sockets and pins to the structure.

Use relatively hard balsa or bamboo for the pins.
